Stainless Steel Balustrades

Stainless steel balustrades for stairs, balconies, mezzanines and pool surrounds, fabricated to suit Wellington's coastal conditions.

About this service

Stainless steel balustrades are a Wellington favourite for one reason. They sit cleanly in modern architecture, they hold up to wind and salt, and they meet the New Zealand Building Code with room to spare. We fabricate, finish and install balustrades for homes, apartments and commercial sites across the region.

Stainless Steel Balustrades

A balustrade has to do two things. It has to look right inside the architecture, and it has to safely hold a person back from falling. Our job is to deliver both at once.

‍

Three balustrade families

Stainless rod or wire infill suits modern homes and gives the cleanest sight line. Stainless framed glass infill is the upgrade for high profile balconies, decks and stair voids where you want maximum daylight and the best view.

‍

Solid stainless mid rail balustrades are the workhorse for commercial settings, healthcare and schools where durability and easy cleaning come first.

‍

How the job runs

Every balustrade is fabricated in our workshop to a spec drawing we share with you before any metal is cut. We confirm the post centres, the infill type, the top rail profile, the finish and the fixing detail before we move to production.

‍

On site we work to building consent loadings and finish with a full handover including a care guide for the chosen finish.

‍

What it costs

Most stainless balustrades on Wellington homes land between $600 and $1,200 per linear metre supplied and installed, before glass infill. Grade drives a good part of that spread: coastal jobs in marine grade 316 sit at the upper end, sheltered inland jobs in 304 at the lower end.

‍

Length and complexity of the run, and whether posts are core drilled into existing concrete or fixed to timber framing, move the number more than anything else. Our full Wellington balustrade price guide breaks down what drives the figure and where people tend to overspend.

Frequently asked questions

Who installs stainless steel balustrades in Wellington?

The Fabricator. We fabricate in our Kāpiti Coast workshop and install across Wellington City, Porirua, Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt, the Kāpiti Coast and the Wairarapa. Site measure, shop drawings, fabrication and install are handled by one team.

‍

How much does a stainless steel balustrade cost in Wellington?

Most stainless balustrades on Wellington homes land between $600 and $1,200 per linear metre supplied and installed, before glass infill. Coastal jobs in marine grade 316 sit at the upper end, sheltered inland jobs in 304 at the lower end.

‍

Stainless wire or glass balustrade?

Wire is lighter, cheaper and faster to install. Glass costs more but gives an unobstructed outlook, which often matters most on coastal balconies. We can quote both side by side so the choice is clear.

‍

How tall does my balustrade need to be?

For a single residence the minimum is usually 1000 millimetres. For decks or stairs over a metre off the ground, or for commercial buildings, the requirement steps up to 1100 millimetres. We confirm the right height for your project against the building code.

‍

How long does a stainless balustrade last in Wellington?

Properly specified marine grade stainless installed to our standard will last decades. Annual rinsing with fresh water and a soft cloth keeps the finish looking new.
