A practical price guide for stainless balustrades on Wellington homes. What drives cost, what is fixed, and how to brief a fabricator properly.

Most stainless balustrades on Wellington homes land somewhere between $600 and $1,200 per linear metre supplied and installed, before glass infill. Glass adds material cost and engineering. Coastal jobs in 316 sit at the upper end. Inland jobs in 304 sit at the lower end.
Three things move the number more than anything else. Grade of stainless. Length and complexity of the run. Whether posts are core drilled into existing concrete or fixed to timber framing.
Compliance is not negotiable. Any balustrade above one metre needs to meet NZBC F4 for fall protection. That dictates baluster spacing, top rail height, and load testing. A cheaper quote that ignores F4 is not a cheaper balustrade. It is an unconsented one. Our guide to building consent for balustrades covers what council will ask for.
If the run is long and the site is sheltered, aluminium powder-coated balustrades typically come in well under a stainless equivalent for the same compliant result. On commercial walkways and service stairs, galvanised handrails are cheaper again.
Bring three things to the first conversation. A rough run length. Photos of the deck or stair. Whether you want glass, vertical balusters, or rod infill. With those, a good fabricator can give you a tight ballpark before site visit.
Over specifying glass thickness, asking for mirror polish where satin would do, and choosing 316 for sheltered interior runs that will never see salt. None of these are wrong. They are just rarely necessary.
