Aluminium Powder-Coated Balustrades

Powder coated aluminium balustrades fabricated on the Kāpiti Coast and installed across Wellington. Glass, wire or picket infill, any colour.

About this service

The Fabricator designs, fabricates and installs powder coated aluminium balustrades across the greater Wellington region. We are the installer as well as the fabricator, so one team handles the site measure, the shop drawings, the powder coat colour and the install. Aluminium is the most cost effective way to enclose a Wellington deck or balcony to code without losing the view.

Aluminium Powder-Coated Balustrades

Aluminium suits balustrades for the same reasons it suits gates. It is light, strong, will not rust, and takes a powder coat that holds its colour for years. Where a stainless balustrade is the higher end pick, a powder coated aluminium balustrade hits the sweet spot for most residential decks, balconies and renovation projects.

‍

The powder coat is the whole point

Aluminium does not rust, but a cheap powder coat will still chalk and fade within a few Wellington summers. We specify a marine grade architectural powder coat as standard, which carries a far longer colour and gloss warranty than a standard grade coating. On sites within sight of the sea we do not offer anything else.

‍

Colour is yours. We match to the joinery, the roof, the fence line or the architect's schedule, in any standard architectural powder coat colour and in matt, satin or gloss. Charcoal, black and Karaka remain the most common picks across Wellington, but there is no cost penalty for choosing something else.

‍

Three systems we build

Aluminium framed glass balustrade gives an unobstructed view and a clean architectural line. Slim aluminium top rail with stainless wire infill suits modern minimal homes. Solid aluminium picket and rail balustrade is the workhorse for commercial walkways and large multi unit decks.

‍

Compliance

Loadings, post centres and infill spacing are confirmed against NZBC F4 before we go to fabrication. Any barrier where a fall of one metre or more is possible has to meet F4, and we design to it by default. Where the engineer requires producer statements, we supply them as part of the package.

‍

What it costs

Powder coated aluminium lands below a stainless equivalent for the same compliant result, which is why it wins on long runs and larger decks. For reference, our balustrade price guide puts stainless between $600 and $1,200 per linear metre supplied and installed; aluminium sits under that band. We quote a fixed price after a free site visit.

Frequently asked questions

Who installs aluminium powder coated balustrades in Wellington?

The Fabricator. We fabricate in our Kāpiti Coast workshop and install across Wellington City, Porirua, the Hutt Valley, Kāpiti and the Wairarapa. Site measure, fabrication, powder coating and install are all handled by us.

‍

Aluminium or stainless for a coastal Wellington property?

If the balustrade is fully exposed to sea spray, stainless wins on longevity. For a sheltered deck or balcony, marine grade powder coated aluminium is a strong, more affordable choice.

‍

What colours can I get?

Any standard architectural powder coat colour, in matt, satin or gloss. We commonly match to existing joinery or the roof. There is no extra cost for a non standard colour choice.

‍

How long does the powder coat last?

A marine grade architectural powder coat holds colour and gloss for well over a decade in Wellington conditions. An annual fresh water rinse on coastal properties adds years to it.

‍

Can I add glass to an existing aluminium frame?

In most cases we can retrofit glass panels into an existing aluminium frame, provided the original posts are sized for the extra load. We assess on site.

‍

Do you handle the building consent paperwork?

Yes. We can supply spec sheets and producer statements aligned to your consent application, designed against NZBC F4.
